EnergyAustralia, one of the country’s leading energy retailers, has launched an ambitious drive to recruit one million Australian homes to a $20 million, market-leading carbon neutral program by 2019.

EnergyAustralia Chief Customer Officer Kim Clarke said research done by the retailer found 75% of people would choose a clean energy solution if it was in their budget.

“Australians believe climate change is a serious issue and they want to do their bit in addressing the issue head on. The problem is the industry is not making it easy or affordable. EnergyAustralia is planning on changing that,” said Ms Clarke.

“We’re setting out to make the electricity produced from one million homes across Australia, carbon neutral – but we need customer’s help. It will not cost them a cent extra, but we will not automatically give it to everyone. Customers need to consciously ‘opt-in’ to carbon neutral electricity – they need to tell us they want it.”

Go Neutral is a new, government-certified carbon neutral product that allows EnergyAustralia households to offset all the carbon emissions generated from their home’s electricity, at no cost to them, and with just the click of a mouse.

By joining the Go Neutral ‘one-million movement’ the average household could offset around five tonnes of carbon emissions annually. It would be like planting 25 trees per home, each year and maintaining those trees for at least three decades. *

Around 20,000 people have joined Go Neutral since the program was launched in 2016. The more people join, the more EnergyAustralia invests in projects to reduce carbon emissions. EnergyAustralia has committed to invest up to $20 million in the program on behalf of customers.

“Customers choosing Go Neutral, and importantly getting one million homes to opt-in, sends a significant message in the form of a challenge to the industry and government.

“We believe climate change is a serious issue. If we can make it affordable and easy, customers will choose this path. And we’ve done just that.

“At no extra cost, EnergyAustralia customers can, with a click of a button choose to join the Go Neutral movement and send a very real message,” said Ms Clarke.

A campaign promoting the Go Neutral ‘one-million movement’ will launch on Sunday 16 July, supported by a multi-channel advertising strategy including television, print and radio advertising.

Go Neutral is a key part of EnergyAustralia’s commitment to prioritising existing customers. It’s available to households which have been with EnergyAustralia for at least six months. Customers can opt-in by visiting energyaustralia.com.au/go-neutral.
