Energy customers should be aware of unsolicited emails claiming to be from EnergyAustralia that are seeking credit card details and payments for energy bills.

The email claims that a customer’s payment for their energy bill has been refused by their bank and asks customers to click onto a link to provide credit card details to avoid their energy supply being suspended.

This email has not been sent by EnergyAustralia and customers should not act on it.

EnergyAustralia does not ask customers for credit card details via an email.

The bogus email states:

Dear Customer EnergyAustralia NSW :

Your payment has been refused by your bank due to a technical problem with the direct debit system,

To avoid the penalties, we give you the option to pay online using your credit card, To pay your bill N° XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX ,Click on the link below :

Failure during regularization of your situation, we will proceed with the suspension of supply of energy, this intervention will be charged.

Customers should disregard and delete the email or report it to the ACCC Infocentre on 1300 302 502, SCAMwatch at  www.scamwatch.gov.au or a state or territory fair trading authority.
