Go Neutral Creating Many Lightbulb Moments In India

Children in India holding compact fluorescent lighting (CFL) globes

EnergyAustralia introduced its certified carbon neutral program at the end of 2016. Since then, we’ve had over 110,000 residential electricity customers choose 100% carbon neutral electricity at no extra cost to them.

How does it work?

To make your electricity carbon neutral, we buy enough carbon offset units to fully offset the carbon emissions associated with your home electricity.

These carbon offsets are sourced from a range of local and overseas projects eligible under the Australian Government’s National Carbon Offset Standard (NCOS).

Large-scale lighting swap scheme in India

One of the exciting projects we’re helping to support, simply by our customers opting into Go Neutral is a community compact fluorescent lighting (CFL) scheme in India, called the Bachat Lamp Yojana project.

This project funds the replacement of old incandescent light globes with highly efficient energy-saving ones, also known as compact fluorescent lighting (CFL).

Incandescent globes are still widely used in India. They consume more energy, increasing demand on the local power stations. This large-scale globe replacement project not only benefits the environment by replacing energy intensive globes and reducing emissions, it also benefits low-income families in India by saving them money.

22 million CFLs distributed

So far, the project has distributed 22 million light globes (a minimum of 6,000 hours) to low income households across several regions including Andhra Pradesh, in and around Hyderabad, across Punjab and in Delhi State.

Our customers’ participation in Go Neutral is helping these low-income households in India reduce their electricity costs without the upfront cost of the light globes (where lighting is the main electricity spend, householders are saving around 10% on bills after their introduction).

More projects

We source our offset units from a range of Australian and international projects. The types of projects include:

  • Revegetation in Australia to reduce emissions
  • Wind energy in China
  • Improving waste management in Brazil

Opt-in to Go Neutral at no cost

We’re aiming to have 1 million customers opt-in to Go Neutral by 2019. If you haven’t already opted in, why not join us* – it’s at no cost to you, you don’t have to do anything, and it can make a difference both here and overseas.
