As more and more Australians make the shift to electric vehicles (EVs made up 7.4% of total vehicle sales in 2024), finding reliable charging infrastructure is still a challenge in regional communities like Ballarat.

A welcome boost for regional Victoria’s EV charging network

That’s why the installation of 12 new EV charging bays at Federation University’s two Ballarat campuses is big news. Comprising eight, 22 kW AC chargers and four, 22 kW and 50 kW chargers, these new chargers are open to students, staff, locals and visitors. While Federation University pursues its net zero 2033 goals, the upside for students and staff is being able to charge their EV’s while on campus, and locals feel encouraged to embrace cleaner energy options, like EVs, with increased confidence, knowing the necessary infrastructure is in place.

It’s not just the locals who’ll reap the benefits. EV driving holiday makers and day trippers visiting Ballarat will also have a reliable place to recharge in Ballarat for industry standard (CCS2) compatible electric vehicles. And to make the experience even easier drivers can use the charging stations via a convenient, ChargeFox mobile phone app.

The partnership that’s helping to decarbonise transport

This initiative has been made possible through a partnership involving Federation University, EnergyAustralia, and the Victorian Government’s Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action. This partnership serves as a model for how collaboration can help add to the evolving network of EV charging infrastructure throughout the state.

According to Professor Duncan Bentley, Vice-Chancellor and President of Federation University; "Installing EV charging stations on campus makes sustainable choices more accessible for our students and staff and is a key step in line with our Towards Net Zero 2033 plan.”

It’s a sentiment that’s shared by EnergyAustralia’s Head of Green Transport, Jack Kotlyar. "By working together, we’re making sustainable transport more accessible for the Ballarat community while supporting Federation University’s broader decarbonisation goals and the transition to a cleaner energy future.”

EnergyAustralia is proud to make the installation of these EV chargers possible because they are just one part of a larger group effort to ensure that regional communities are not left behind in Australia’s transition to electric transport. As infrastructure continues to develop, this Ballarat based initiative sets an example for how regional areas can support the adoption of EV technology and make a special part of regional Victoria better-equipped for EVs.
