As the temperature drops, it’s tempting to turn up the heat and snuggle in, but this cold lead to a spike in your energy use. The good news? There are plenty of simple, low-cost ways to keep your home cosy and warm without stretching the budget. No matter where you are living, these practical tips could help your family stay warm while using energy more efficiently.

Why does energy usage climb in winter?

In many Australian homes, heating makes up around 40% of winter energy use. Add longer nights, more time indoors (especially during the winter school holidays), and hot showers, and it’s easy to see how the bills can grow. Thankfully, a few clever changes can help you stay warm while helping to keep your energy usage in check.

1. Only heat the rooms you're using

If you have the option, don’t heat the whole house if you’re only using one or two rooms. Close doors, use door snakes and focus warmth where you need it most.

  • Quick win: Block drafts with a rolled-up towel and close off unused areas.

2. Reverse your ceiling fan

Ceiling fans aren’t just for summer. Switch yours to winter mode to gently push warm air back down from the ceiling, helping your heater work more effectively.

  • Quick win: Look for the small switch on your fan and set it to spin clockwise on a low speed.

3. Rug up before turning the heat up

Wearing warm clothes and using heated throws or blankets (on a timer) can make a big difference. Thermal socks, beanies, and hoodies are your first line of defence.

  • Quick win: Try a family rule—layer up before the heater goes on, maybe matching family onesies?

4. Make your windows work harder

Up to 40% of heat loss happens through windows. Blackout curtains, thermal blinds or even window insulation film can help trap heat inside.

  • Quick win: Close curtains before sunset to lock in the warmth.

5. Set your thermostat to 18–20°C

Each degree above 20°C can increase your heating costs by up to 10%. Staying between 18 and 20°C balances comfort and energy efficiency.

  • Quick win: Check your current setting—you might be using more than you need.

6. Cut hot water costs

Hot water use jumps in winter. Keep showers to four minutes, use cold water for washing clothes, and install a low-flow showerhead where possible.

  • Quick win: Use a timer or play a four-minute song to keep showers short and sweet.

7. Unplug the energy vampires

Devices like TVs, consoles and chargers still draw power when left on standby. Turn them off at the wall or use a smart power board to cut unnecessary use.

  • Quick win: Group devices together to switch them off in one go.

Final thoughts: Small changes, big impact

Winter doesn’t have to mean high energy usage. With a few simple changes to how and when you use energy at home, you can stay comfortable and reduce your energy use. That’s a warm result all round.
