EnergyAustralia customers should be aware of a new phone scam, with hoax callers purporting to offer energy discounts and seeking customers’ details.
Group Manager Sales, Mike Barrett, warned that hoax callers claiming to represent energy broker Street Smart Energy were offering fake discounts of up to 40% on EnergyAustralia bills.
“Although Street Smart Energy is authorised to offer discounts on EnergyAustralia’s energy plans, these scam callers offering 40% discounts are not from Street Smart Energy.
“Customers can confirm they are being offered a genuine discount by calling Street Smart Energy directly on 1300 767 056.
“You can also report scam activity to our customer service centre 133 466; the ACCC Infocentre on 1300 302 502 or a state or territory fair trading authority. For tips on avoiding scams visit SCAMwatch at www.scamwatch.gov.au.”
Mr Barrett said EnergyAustralia took scam activity seriously and had reported this latest hoax to the relevant authorities to investigate.
