EnergyAustralia, one of the country’s leading energy retailers, today said it would provide rebates for the majority of its Victorian customers on "no-frills" electricity offers, saving households most in need around $720 on average in 2018.

The initiative is part of the company’s commitment to helping ease the pressure on Victorian families facing high energy prices.

In addition to the rebates announced today, EnergyAustralia has recently launched a new rate-fix product, Secure Saver, which offers Victorians the ability to avoid 2018 price increases. An average Victorian EnergyAustralia customer on Secure Saver could pay about $940 less for their energy over the next two years than those who do not sign up for the product.

EnergyAustralia Managing Director Catherine Tanna said: "Families in Victoria are hurting from rises in electricity prices. We can’t control the cost of energy but as a retailer we share responsibility for helping our customers get through difficult times."

The measures announced today involve EnergyAustralia:

  •  Providing an on-bill rebate of up to 45 per cent in calendar 2018 for Victorian residential electricity concession customers on standing offer tariffs – an overall saving of $720 per year.
  •  Providing an on-bill rebate of up to 25 per cent in calendar 2018 for Victorian residential electricity customers on standing offer tariffs – an overall saving of $440 per year.
  •  Writing to all residential EnergyAustralia electricity customers on standing offer tariffs with options for moving to more competitive plans with longer-duration benefit periods, such as Secure Saver.

EnergyAustralia will engage a consumer organisation to help identify those customers on standing offer tariffs most in need of support.

Standing offers are regulated default agreements, typically providing no benefits such as pay-on-time discounts. Ms Tanna said some customers on these basic offers might not be aware better plans were available.

"As energy prices rise in 2018 it’s critical that customers make sure they’re on a competitive deal that’s right for them," Ms Tanna said. "If you have family and friends on standing offer tariffs, please encourage them to get in touch with us, on-line or via phone.
