A gas-fired power station at Marulan near Goulburn in New South Wales is one option we’re currently investigating to potentially fill capacity gaps in the national electricity market only a few years from now.
EnergyAustralia acquired the 116-hectare site, about two hours south-west of Sydney, in 2010. Planning approval is valid until late 2019.
The location was chosen for its proximity to the existing high-voltage transmission network, aiding connection to the electricity grid, and to the Moomba-Sydney gas pipeline, a source of fuel for the power station.
Gas-fired generation has an important role to play in a new, modern energy system. A plant at Marulan could respond quickly to fluctuations in electricity demand, providing secure supply for large numbers of households and businesses across the state, and nationally.
It’s early in our assessment of the project and much work still needs to be done, including consulting with the community.
