There’s nothing like the quiet power of an electric vehicle (EV) – smooth, efficient, and a nice break from rising fuel prices. But after a month of home charging, you may have noticed an increase in your electricity bill.
That's because driving an electric vehicle changes the way you use energy at home. Your usual electricity plan might not be designed to keep your charging costs low. That’s where an EV plan comes in: a special kind of electricity plan made especially for EV owners.
What is an EV plan?
Our EV Night Boost plan recognises that charging an EV changes your home electricity use. In fact, the Electric Vehicle Council estimates charging your EV can add around 50% to your household electricity consumption¹. That makes it one of the biggest energy users in your home.
EV plans typically offer electricity at lower rates when you’re most likely to be charging your car. That’s why our EV Night Boost plan offers a super-low rate of just 7c/kWh between midnight and 6.00am, because that’s an ideal time to plug in and charge so you can wake up ready to go.
Plus, many EV models already include the ability to schedule a charge at a specific time. That means you can automatically start charging in the low-rate window. Just set and forget!
Why should I get an EV plan?
Having an EV plan that matches when and how you use energy can make a big difference.
Let’s crunch the numbers. With a dedicated 7.2kW wall charger, a 6-hour overnight charge typically delivers around 43.2kWh of energy. On EV Night Boost, that'll cost you just $3.02 – compared to nearly $12.79 on our Standing Offer Home rate²,³.
And what do you get for that cost? A 6-hour overnight charge can give you approximately 200 to 300km of driving range⁴. That’s enough to cover several days of commuting or even a road trip from Sydney to the Central Coast and back.
Your EV is smart. Your electricity plan should be too.
Ready to charge smart?
If you own an EV or are planning to get one and you are in NSW, switching to an EV plan like EV Night Boost is a smart way to keep your charging costs low.

Important details explained
- According to the Electric Vehicle (EV) Council.
- The Standing Offer Home rate of 29.61c/kWh overnight is in the Ausgrid distribution zone. The Standing Offer Home rate may differ based on distribution zone.
- Calculation based on a 6-hour overnight charge using a dedicated 7.2 kW home EV charger, delivering 43.2 kWh of charge to your EV. At the EV Night Boost off-peak rate of 7c/kWh, this would cost approximately $3.02. The same charge on EnergyAustralia’s Standing Offer Home plan in the Ausgrid distribution zone (general usage rate of 29.61c/kWh on a time of use tariff between midnight and 6.00am as at July 2025) would cost approximately $12.79 — a difference of $9.77. Calculation assumes top-up charging, not charging your EV battery from 0-100%. Actual costs and savings will vary depending on the type of charger you use, your location, your energy usage, charging habits, and whether charging occurs entirely within the off-peak window (midnight to 6.00am). A smart meter is required.
- Range estimate based on 43.2 kWh of charge delivered over 6 hours using a typical 7.2 kW home charger. Assumes energy consumption of 14–20 kWh per 100 km, depending on EV model and driving conditions. Actual range may vary based on factors such as vehicle type, battery size, load, terrain, weather, and driving style.
