EnergyAustralia’s Hallett Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) has reached financial close and is now moving into the delivery phase, marking a major milestone for the project and for South Australia’s energy system.
The project has reached commercial close following Final Investment Decision, marking a major new investment in the Goyder region’s energy infrastructure.
Owned and developed by EnergyAustralia, the project is being built alongside the existing Hallett gas‑fired power station and will deliver 50 megawatts of power with five hours of storage in its first stage. Planning approval is already in place for a further 150 megawatts, taking the total site ambition to 200 megawatts.
Hallett BESS has moved from concept to investment decision in under two years, an unusually fast timeframe for infrastructure of this scale. The Hallett BESS will begin construction in the next few weeks with commercial operations expected in mid-2027.
EnergyAustralia Trading and Transition Executive, Daniel Nugent, said the project builds on the company’s long-standing presence in the region.
“This project shows how existing sites can play an important role in the energy transition,” Mr Nugent said.
“By building the battery at Hallett, we’re making use of infrastructure that is already there, supporting local jobs and strengthening South Australia’s power system at the same time. Financial close means this project is real, funded and now being built and our focus now shifts squarely to disciplined execution and delivery.
“Projects like Hallett BESS are essential to store that energy and release it when it’s needed most. The battery will help keep the grid reliable and support South Australia’s leadership in clean energy,” Mr Nugent said.
The battery will connect through existing equipment at the Hallett Power Station, minimising the need for new transmission works and reducing land and environmental impacts. By operating in a complementary role alongside the existing 235MW gas-fired power station, the battery strengthens the site’s role as a flexible energy hub, providing fast, flexible storage to support renewable generation while enabling the gas plant to continue providing firm capacity during periods of sustained demand.
Project delivery partners
NHOA Energy has been engaged as the battery integrator, responsible for supplying the batteries and inverters, while Enerven will deliver civil, electrical and construction works.
NHOA Energy VP Australia & Pacific Adrian Marziano said the project would play a critical role in strengthening Australia’s energy system, while highlighting the company’s integration expertise.
"NHOA Energy is honored to have been selected by EnergyAustralia as the system integrator for the Hallett Battery Energy Storage System. This partnership represents a significant milestone in our commitment to delivering world-class energy storage solutions in Australia.
The Hallett BESS project is another important step forward in Australia's transition to net zero. By combining NHOA Energy's proven integration expertise with EnergyAustralia's vision for a more sustainable energy future, we are building critical infrastructure that will enhance grid stability, support renewable energy deployment, and accelerate the decarbonisation of Australia's electricity system.
We look forward to working closely with EnergyAustralia to deliver this transformational project and contribute to a more sustainable energy future for all Australians.”
Enerven CEO Richard Amato said the project would deliver meaningful outcomes for local communities, while showcasing capabilities locally.
“This project will deliver real benefits for the local community, from employment opportunities during construction through to long-term investment in regional energy infrastructure that supports the Goyder region and beyond,” Mr Amato said. “We’re proud that our people, many of whom live and work in regional South Australia, will play a role in delivering infrastructure that strengthens the local economy and supports the energy transition.”
“South Australia is where it all started for Enerven, and this great project in Hallett is particularly special because it allows us to bring that experience and capability back to our own backyard.”
“Partnering with EnergyAustralia showcases what’s possible when strong local knowledge is combined with national delivery capability and a shared commitment to community.”
The project has secured support under the Commonwealth Capacity Investment Scheme, recognising its contribution to system reliability and the strength of its delivery and community commitments.
Local impact
EnergyAustralia has been part of the Hallett, Burra and Jamestown communities for more than 15 years. Alongside construction of the BESS, EnergyAustralia has committed more than $700,000 in community benefits, including local grants, support for emergency services, community batteries, road upgrades, and targeted First Nations participation. This includes funding for training and capacity building in the region, ensuring community members can build skills and careers as South Australia’s energy system evolves.
