Imagine cutting your energy bill and being part of the energy transition, without installing a thing. No hardware, no loan, no lock-in contract. Just affordable,  more sustainable energy, whether you own a home or rent.

That's what we’ve set out to make possible for every Australian, not just those who own their home or can afford a rooftop solar system. And it's what Community Battery Ease aims to deliver.

Keeping energy local

Community batteries work by storing energy when there's plenty of it. Typically during the day when rooftop solar often generates more than households can use. That energy is then released locally in the evening, when the sun has gone, demand peaks and electricity prices are at their highest.

By keeping energy within the neighbourhood rather than sending it up the line and buying it back later, we reduce the cost of delivering it. And instead of that benefit disappearing into the system, we ensure customers see it on their bills.

For customers there’s no hardware. No installation. No lock-in contract. Just affordable energy for people who live near a community battery – whether they own or rent, live in a house or an apartment, have solar or don't.

What we built

We created Community Battery Ease to make that happen. Eligible households in New South Wales pay significantly less than the electricity comparison price – the governmentset benchmark price used to help customers compare electricity plans.

It's been recognised by the industry. Community Battery Ease has won a Canstar Blue Innovation Excellence Award and the Australian Good Design Award

Scaling what works

We launched Community Battery Ease with the Ausgrid network. Then we asked, where else does this work?

The answer was the Endeavour Energy network. And so we rolled out 44 community batteries across the suburbs of Bidwill, Blaxland, Cabramatta, Dapto, Hobartville and Warrawong. They're communities that know what cost-of-living pressure feels like. And that's exactly why we wanted to be there.

A pathway for everyone

Community Battery Ease sits alongside Battery Ease – our Virtual Power Plant (VPP) offer for home battery owners, who earn bill credits in exchange for supporting grid stability during critical events like heat waves. Together, they form something we’re excited about because there’s a pathway for most people.

Own a home battery? Join Battery Ease and earn rewards. Don't have one or don't want one? Community Battery Ease gives you access to  more affordable energy with nothing to install and no long-term commitment.

That's not just good product design. It's a statement about the kind of retailer we want to be. One that supports our customers and enables more of them to be part of the renewable energy transition.

Good for everyone

What we love most about community batteries is that they’re genuinely a win for everyone involved. Customers get low bills and a real connection to the renewable energy transition. Distributors get a more balanced, stable local grid. And EnergyAustralia gets to do exactly what our purpose calls for – leading and accelerating the clean energy transition for all.

Community batteries are currently a trial in select NSW postcodes, and we're working to bring it to more areas.

The energy transition will only work if everyone can be part of it. And we’re proud that we're doing something real to make that happen.
