Cheaper Home Battery Program: Save up to 30%

July 2025

Solar customers have long enjoyed generating their own power during the day, but without a battery that solar energy disappears once the sun goes down.

The high cost of batteries has been a barrier for many households looking to take the next step in their solar journey – until now.

This month, the federal government’s new Cheaper Home Batteries Program has started, offering up to 30% off the upfront cost of installing an eligible home battery system.

No, that’s not a typo. It’s a major step toward helping more Australians take control of their energy and use more renewable power.

What is the Cheaper Home Batteries Program?

The Cheaper Home Batteries Program is a federal government initiative designed to put battery storage within reach, so more Australians can take control of how they use their energy.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • The program provides an incentive of up to 30% off the upfront cost of installing an eligible home battery.

  • It will be available to eligible households across Australia.

  • To qualify for the incentive, the systems must be between 5kWh and 100kWh and must be switched on after 1 July 2025.

Why consider a home battery?

When you have solar panels, you generate electricity during the day. But that’s not always when you need it most, and any excess energy you don’t use is often sold back to the grid.

A battery changes that.

It stores any extra solar energy you produce during the day, so you can use it at another time. Whether it's in the evening when you’re making dinner, during peak pricing periods, or on cloudy days when solar generation is low, a battery gives you control over how and when you use your solar power.

In New South Wales there’s even more reason to act. Eligible households with a battery system can also join our Virtual Power Plant (VPP) through Battery Ease, earning additional bill credits for supporting the grid in times of need.

By joining a VPP, your home battery becomes part of something bigger. When demand is high (like on hot summer evenings) your excess solar can be shared with the grid to help keep the lights on for everyone.

It’s a win-win: joining a VPP gives you more value, while helping create more stable energy system.
