Yallourn CCGT

EnergyAustralia is proposing to build a Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power station at our existing Yallourn site in the Latrobe Valley in Victoria.

Yallourn Power Station

Meeting new energy needs

The proposed power station will be capable of base load generation, producing approximately 1000MW – the equivalent of meeting the energy needs of 400,000 households each year.

Not only will it help secure Victorian energy supply to meet household and business energy demand, it will also support industry in the local region by creating jobs during the construction and operational phases of the project.

What will it look like?

The project will include:

  • a natural gas fuelled CCGT power station
  • cooling towers
  • control room and workshops
  • a gas receiving station
  • a switchyard
  • electrical infrastructure including substation, generators, transformers and switchgear

The site will connect to the Longford-Dandenong mainline gas pipeline using 6.5km of pipeline, with an easement of approximately 30 metres.

It will connect to the existing Hazelwood-South Morang transmission line, requiring about 10km of electricity transmission line, with an easement of approximately 60 metres.

Yallourn CCGT project update

Current status - Next steps

In July 2012 EnergyAustralia (TRUenergy) introduced a change to the direction of the Yallourn Gas Turbine Power Station EES project to include the option of a staged development. The staged approach was aimed at allowing greater flexibility in the project’s ability to meet the needs of the changing electricity market.

However, due to significant reduced demand in the national electricity market in 2012, EnergyAustralia has now taken the view that there is no longer a requirement for the Yallourn Gas Turbine Power Station project in the current planning horizon.
After much consideration, the decision has been made to put the project on hold until the electricity market outlook improves. Whilst we will continue to review the need for generation in Victoria it is unlikely that this need will reappear in the near term.

The decision will not impact on the ongoing operations of the Yallourn Power Station.
