Educational resources
Energy is an important part of our daily lives. We use it to cook food, run computers and to heat and cool our homes.
Where does your energy come from?
We have information sheets available to help students understand how gas, electricity and renewable energy sources such as wind are created.
Coal electricity generation
Fossil fuels like coal are naturally formed materials that are used to generate electricity. Currently around a third of the world’s electricity is generated using coal.
Gas electricity generation
Gas is a major source of electricity generation. There are two main types of gas fired electricity generation plants.
- Open cycle gas turbine (OCGT)
- Combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT)
Renewable energy
Renewable energy comes from natural resources such as the sun and wind. The Australian Government has put in place schemes and targets to ensure that 20 per cent of Australia's electricity supply will come from renewable sources by 2020.
