Certificate of electrical safety

A certificate of electrical safety is required for electricity connections after a premises has been vacant for 12 months or more. It is a requirement from electricity distributors to remain compliant with each state's Electricity Safety Act.

A qualified licensed electrician can complete testing in order to provide a certificate of electrical safety for you.

Different States and Territories have different names for the certificate:

  • New South Wales: Certificate of Compliance Electrical Work
  • Victoria: Certificate of Electrical Safety
  • Queensland: Testing and Compliance Certificate or Electrical Work Request
  • South Australia: Electrical Certificate of Compliance
  • ACT: Certificate of Electrical Safety.

A certificate of electrical safety must be completed by a licensed electrician and the electrician is responsible for compliance with regulations.

It's a good idea to check your electrician signs, dates and completes all fields on the form. The name on the certificate should be the same as the person who is requesting the el ectricity to be connected.

Yes. Your licensed electrician can advise of their fees.

Yes. Your distributor will remain the same so you will still be asked to provide a certificate of electrical safety. Electricity will not be connected until the electrical safety certificate is submitted to the distributor regardless of who the retailer is.

Each state has a different process. 

Victoria

In Victoria once a licensed electrician has completed your Certificate of Electrical Safety you can email it to us at serviceorders@energyaustralia.com.au. 

We will contact you to confirm we have received your certificate, submit the certificate to the distributor on your behalf and then arrange for the electricity to be connected.

We'll contact you to advise when you can expect your electricity to be switched on.

New South Wales

In NSW a licensed electrician will submit the Certificate of Compliance Electrical Work for you.

Once your electrician has submitted your certificate please contact us at serviceorders@energyaustralia.com.au or reply to our SMS to let us know the certificate has been completed and we will arrange for the electricity to be connected.

We'll contact you to advise when you can expect your electricity to be switched on.

Australia Capital Territory

In the ACT a licensed electrician will submit the Certificate of Electrical Safety for you.

Once your electrician has submitted your certificate please contact us at serviceorders@energyaustralia.com.au or reply to our SMS to let us know the certificate has been completed and we will arrange for the electricity to be connected.

We'll contact you to advise when you can expect your electricity to be switched on.

South Australia

In South Australia once a licensed electrician has completed your Electrical Certificate of Compliance you can email it to us at serviceorders@energyaustralia.com.au.

We will contact you to confirm we have received your certificate, submit the certificate to the distributor on your behalf and then arrange for the electricity to be connected.

We'll contact you to advise when you can expect your electricity to be switched on.

Queensland

In Queensland once a licensed electrician has completed your Testing and Compliance Certificate or Electrical Work Request you can email it to us at serviceorders@energyaustralia.com.au.

We will contact you to confirm we have received your certificate, submit the certificate to the distributor on your behalf and then arrange for the electricity to be connected.

We'll contact you to advise when you can expect your electricity to be switched on.
