The NSW Government offers a number of rebates to eligible customers to help pay your energy bills. These rebates are funded by the NSW Government and include:

  • Low Income Household Rebate – for customers who hold eligible concession cards issued by the Federal Department of Human Services or the Department of Veterans Affairs;
  • Family Energy Rebate – available to customers who have received the Family Tax Benefit from the Federal Department of Human Services;
  • Life Support Electricity Rebate – for households where residents use certain medical equipment necessary to sustain life; and
  • Medical Energy Rebate – for eligible customers who have a medically diagnosed inability to self-regulate body temperature when exposed to extremes of environmental temperatures.

Low Income Household Rebate

The Low Income Household Rebate helps eligible NSW households pay their energy bills. From 1 July 2014, the NSW Department of Trade & Investment offers a Low Income Household Rebate of $235 (excluding GST) a year to eligible customers who hold an electricity account.

How to apply if you’re an electricity account holder with EnergyAustralia

If you’re an EnergyAustralia electricity account holder, just call 133 466 (ten digit account numbers) or 13 15 02 (nine digit account numbers) to find out if you’re eligible for the Low Income Household Rebate. We can help you apply over the phone, or visit our online form.

For eligible electricity account holders, the rebate is paid in instalments and is represented as a credit on your electricity bill. The calculation of the rebate paid on each bill will depend on the number of days in each billing period.

How to apply if you live in a residential community

Residents living in a residential community (caravan or mobile home park) with on-supplied electricity who pay the operator for their electricity usage can also access the Low Income Household Rebate.

From 1 July 2014, the Low Income Household Rebate is paid to you by the NSW Department of Trade & Investment as a single payment each financial year. You can apply for this rebate and access the form here (PDF, 517kb) .

Medical Energy Rebate

The Medical Energy Rebate is available to people with an inability to self-regulate their body temperature. The account holder for the residence must hold an eligible concession card and a medical diagnosis will be required to qualify for this rebate.

From 1 July 2014, the NSW Department of Trade & Investment offers a Medical Energy Rebate of $235 (excluding GST) a year to eligible customers who hold an electricity account.

Life Support Rebate

The NSW Department of Trade & Investment's Life Support Rebate assists people using approved life support equipment with paying their electricity bills.

The calculation of the rebate depends on the type of equipment used. Examples of the current daily rates for eligible machines are as follows:

How to apply if you’re an electricity account holder with EnergyAustralia

In order to be eligible for the Life Support Electricity Rebate you’ll need to fill out an application form every two years with your medical practitioner's authorisation, and return the completed form to us.

Family Energy Rebate

The Family Energy Rebate assists families with managing their energy costs and it’s only available to residential customers who receive the Commonwealth Government’s Family Tax Benefit A or B.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Family Energy Rebate within a financial year, you must: 

  1. Be a New South Wales resident; and 
  2. Be an account holder with EnergyAustralia or a long term resident of an on-supplied residential community, whose name appears on the electricity account for supply to his or her principal place of residence; and
  3. Have been assessed by the Federal Department of Human Services as eligible for Family Tax Benefit (FTB) A or B at any time during the financial year immediately preceding the financial year in which an application for the Family Energy Rebate is made and received a payment of FTB in respect to that eligibility.

In 2014-2015, the Family Energy Rebate is $150 for non-concession card holders and $15 for concession card holders. The amount you are eligible to receive will be determined by the Department of Trade & Investment when you apply.

How to apply

Applications for the 2014-2015 Family Energy Rebate must be submitted by
16 June 2015.
