Characteristics of supply

A perfect power supply is not always possible

EnergyAustralia's objective is to maintain a highly reliable electricity network, however it is not practicable to provide a continuous and perfect network through which electricity can be supplied.

It is inevitable that from time to time you may experience a temporary power fluctuation or interruption. Reasons for this include planned or emergency maintenance work, unforseen failure of equipment, or damage to the network caused by trees or storms.

System usage by other customers, or your own equipment can also cause fluctuations in the characteristics of electricity supplied by your retailer through the EnergyAustralia network. EnergyAustralia endeavours to minimise interruptions, and where they occur, limit their impact on homes and businesses.

More information on the impact EnergyAustralia’s electricity network has on characteristics of the electricity supplied by your retailer through the EnergyAustralia electricity network can be found in Electricity Network Operation Standard (ENOS - formerly ES2). This document can be found in our Electrical Supply Standards webpage.

The Electricity Supply Association of Australia (ESAA) has also produced a selection of publications which help electricity consumers understand the nature and characteristics of their electricity supply. They explain the causes of supply interruptions and voltage variations and offer suggestions on how you can manage them. For example you may wish to consult with your electrician and /or computer technician about the installation of a surge protector, a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) or other protective measures for your electrical equipment.

A six-page leaflet entitled 'Blackout, Glitches, Flicker and Hum' is directed at residential customers. As the name implies, it describes the headline issues of reliability of supply as they impact on residential situations. The following PDFs are available for download:

Advice for business customers

An eight-page leaflet for business customers titled 'Customer Guide to Electricity Supply' is styled on a checklist of what an individual business wants to achieve using electrical equipment and the conditions expected or being experienced. The following PDFs are available for download:
