Ourimbah to Wamberal power line project

EnergyAustralia is constructing a new power line to supply the Wamberal zone substation under construction in Willoughby Road Terrigal from the Ourimbah subtransmission substation in Yates Road Ourimbah.

The new combination overhead and underground power line is part of a $50 million investment to support the electricity needs of Wamberal, Terrigal, Erina, Avoca and Picketts Valley and surrounding suburbs into the future.

Work to construct the overhead section of the new power line started in late March 2008, with installation of the underground cables expected to begin in mid 2008 after a cable laying contractor is appointed.

The route and construction of the new power line were the subject of an extensive community consultation process between February 2006 and September 2007. An environmental assessment for the project was then prepared between September 2007 and March 2008.

The project plans were finalised after consideration of all input by individuals, local community groups, neighbourhood representatives and relevant government authorities.

The line proposed along Tumbi Road is a standard single pole power line. To help maintain local aesthetics the wires of the new power line will be incorporated on new timber poles with the existing overhead power lines, instead of building a separate new line.

Environmental assessment of the project
Planning for this project included preparation of an environmental assessment or 'Review of Environmental Factors' (REF) in accordance with the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979. This document was produced by independent environmental firm GHD.

Electric and magnetic fields (EMF) were a key consideration in conducting the environmental assessment, particularly operation of the line in relation to schools, child care facilities and private residences.
