City Convenience Store - Sydney CBD

Power to save: LoadSmart is saving Hosny Sayed’s business $5,000 a year.

Hosny Sayed runs a busy convenience store in the Sydney CBD, opening from 6am to 12 Midnight during the week and 24 hours a day on most weekends.

He uses electricity to run a large cool room, several fridges, three computers for his internet café, a cash register and lights.

Hosny also uses an air conditioner in the afternoon during the hot summer months.

As a small business owner, Hosny knows that every dollar you spend comes off your bottom line and so he is always looking for ways to save money.

However, he didn’t know there was a way to save on his energy bill, without turning off his appliances. He is now saving more than $5,000 a year on energy costs, a saving of more than 25 per cent.

This is because his store has its energy consumption measured using a new smart meter and he is on the new EnergyAustralia LoadSmart energy billing.

LoadSmart divides the day into three periods, offpeak, shoulder and peak. The new smart meter technology measures how much electricity Hosny uses in the shop over 30 minute intervals.

By using LoadSmart, he pays less for the energy he uses in non peak times and more during the peak. “Everything goes up now, so when you see something that goes down it’s very good,” Hosny said.

“When I got my first bill I straight away realised it was much better. It’s important when you run a small business because everything you save really does count.”

Hosny is better off under LoadSmart , even without making any changes to his electricity use. However, he has more control over his electricity bill under this system.

If he is chooses to turn the lights off in his store when it’s not open, he could save an extra $650 a year.
