Marulan Gas Turbine Facilities Project
EnergyAustralia is seeking development approval to build a gas turbine facility on a site located approximately 12 km north of Marulan, which is 25 km east of Goulburn. Delta Electricity proposes to also build a similar gas turbine facility on an adjoining site.
The facility is designed to generate electricity to help meet peaks in demand, which occur on hot and cold days. Gas turbine plants are able to fire up and shut down quickly to cater for these demand peaks.
On 8 October 2007 the Director-General of the NSW Department of Planning declared the Marulan Gas Turbine Facilities Project was considered a Major Project and would be assessed under Part 3A of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979.
Environmental assessment and consultation
Independent engineering and environmental consultancy firm URS Australia was commissioned to undertake an environmental assessment as required under the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979. Consulting with the community is a vital part of the environmental assessment process.
The environmental assessment addresses the environmental aspects of the two facilities individually, as well as cumulative aspects.
Measures to mitigate any aspect of gas turbine operations on the local social and ecological environment have been identified as part of this environmental assessment.
The environmental assessment will be on public display from Wednesday 10th September to Friday 10th October 2008.
Project Timing
Subject to planning approval construction of EnergyAustralia’s gas turbine facility is due to start in early 2009 and it is scheduled to begin operation in June 2010.
